If you have an extra $150,000 (or more) burning a hole in your pocket and you're a poker fan you just might check out an upcoming auction from deigner STAHL which will sell a high-end luxury poker chip set to the highest bidder.
The poker chips are valued at $150,000 and come with the sort of luxury you'd expect, with the “Meteorite” chip set including diamond-encrusted chips filled with fragments from an actual meteorite.
Each chip is encased in 18-karat white gold and studded with diamonds, Burmese rubies, and Sri Lankan sapphires, with the case they come in fashioned from Swedish calf skin (plus reindeer calf suede inside).
The winner of the Christie's auction on November 29 will get 120 poker chips, the carrying case, a deck of cards, and five ivory dice -- all for the low starting bid of $150,000.
While some individual collectible poker chips have sold for $10,000-$50,000 in the past (including chips from now defunct US casinos such as the Showboat Casino and the Sahara), the Meteorite chip set is believed to be one of the most expensive chip sets ever sold.
Some online poker players have never seen or handled an actual poker chip but many poker fans collect chips, with a thriving market for rare and valuable chips as well as for high-end luxury chips such as the ones STAHL has created and will be auctioning off.
