World's Largest Casino Already Shrinking?
The Genting Group's planned $4 billion casino project in Miami -- which is designed to be the world's largest casino -- is already running into opposition that could see it shrink in order to gain necessary approvals.
Genting announced its planned project six months ago, which would include a 5,200 room resort hotel as well as 800,000 square feet of casino space -- more than four times larger than anything in Las Vegas.
Miami is looking to add up to three resort style casinos in the area, which are projected to produce as much as $6 billion in gambling revenues each year and add up to 100,000 permanent jobs (not to mention construction jobs for massive projects such as Genting's proposed one).
Genting's plan, however, is encountering opposition from a variety of parties, including Miami Heat owner Micky Arison and others due to the traffic woes it could create and the large impact its massive footprint would have on the city of Miami.
Genting issued a recent statement in response to say: "We continue to collaborate and listen to stakeholders, Miami residents, and business and civic leaders at the state and local levels. The only thing set in stone is that Resorts World Miami will be a world-class destination resort."
Florida isn't the only state to take a serious look at expanding its casinos, with Massachusetts recently approving the addition of casinos for the first time and several other US states expanding slots parlors into full-fledged casinos.
