WPT Vienna Sets Attendance Record

WPT Vienna Sets Attendance Record

The World Poker Tour (WPT) visited Vienna for the first time in late March, with WPT Vienna kicking off on March 26th. Sponsored by PartyPoker (which also runs the very popular PartyCasino site), expectations were high for the turnout for the tournament, as sites including bwin, PartyPoker, and Full Tilt all ran online satellites on their respective sites that would see some lucky players win trip packages to visit Vienna and play in a WPT event.

The tournament definitely didn't disappoint, as a whopping 555 players took their seats over two starting days to chase their dreams of a WPT title, setting a new record for the biggest field in a WPT event on non-US soil. PartyPoker has expanded the international stops on the WPT schedule the last few years and that strategy seems to be paying off, as both WPT Amneville and WPT Vienna have drawn very large fields during the current WPT season.

WPT Vienna generated an overall prizepool of just over €1.7 million, with the winner collecting a tidy €447,840 for their efforts -- not a bad payday at all for playing poker for four days. With 36 players left in the field at the moment it's still anyones tournament to win, with many of the bigger names in action (including Tony G, Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier, and Leo Margets) falling by the wayside.

Of the remaining players, Alessio Isaia will be chasing his second WPT title, along with plenty of other well-known online poker pros such as Marc Inizan, Per Linde, Jens Klaning, and Mario Adinolfi in the mix as well. Once play wraps up in Vienna the action will move just a short hop away to Bratiislava, where the WPT will return for the second time for WPT Bratislava before returning to US soil for the Hollywood Poker Open.
